Edgy, but largely without a point

It's an excellent scam, but the situation defies belief:
The first “anti-stab” knife is to go on sale in Britain, designed to work as normal in the kitchen but to be ineffective as a weapon.

The knife has a rounded edge instead of a point and will snag on clothing and skin to make it more difficult to stab someone.
Getting one's self killed with one of these "safe knives" won't make one any less dead for the effort. In fact, there is danger in the idea that there is any such thing as a "safe knife" to begin with; as even the most wet-behind-the-ears Scout knows, a dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp one due to forcing the blade during use, and failure to treat any tool with respect will inevitably lead to injury.

One hardly knows what to expect next; a universal ban on grinding wheels? Perhaps cleavers? Rocks? Whiffle bats?

Pathetic.

I bet if you slashed hard across the throat or stabbed hard a downward angle anywhere near someone's neck it would still go through... like a hot knife through butter.

As if sharpening a piece of metal on the sidewalk is too high tech for people to figure out.

Heh, I had almost that exact same thought when I saw the knives... That little spur on the tip isn't large, but it's large enough (much like kitty-claws).

As for sharpening metal on the sidewalk, why bother? The black-market will almost certainly provide. I simply do not understand the people that maintain that prohibition of certain kinds of property is a viable means of controlling the behavior of others. To reinforce your point, though, it's not a difficult task to manufacture fully-automatic weapons (like the Sten) or easily-concealable weapons (think FP-45 "Liberator") with minimal skills.

Interesting thought: is there always something within arm's reach that would make a viable weapon?

If one outlaws dangerous knives, then only outlaws will have danger ones.

"...is there always something within arm's reach that would make a viable weapon?"

Absolutely. My desk drawer is full of pens, and has a letter opener, a spoon, a stapler, a flat-screen monitor on top. Any one of those make a sufficient weapon given enough skill strength and surprise. If I stand up I have access to a 2.5 shaku edged, pointed katana that is mounted on the wall that I bought in Kyoto when I was into Iaido.

I wonder how many people in the UK are killed by teens driving cars than by knife-wielding thugs. Yet they seem to be unwilling to ban teens and young adults piloting two-ton missiles down the street at 38 fps (25 mph).

I keep a one-handed opener "assault knife" on my person for just such an emergency.

Regarding cars: this is exactly the reason I love the concept of having a motorcycle, but not necessarily driving a motorcycle; I distrust other drivers even while enclosed in a protective cage.

Gack! I have extremely sharp kitchen knives. I consider them a secondary (maybe third, fourth, no, more like fifth) line of defense. And, yeah, my chef's knife can probably decapitate, or darn close (the cleaver is a bit too thick of blade). I guess it goes, pistol/shotgun, fists, sword, pepper spray, brass knuckles, THEN kitchen knives. Though, where I am, what I am doing, and the nature of the threat must all be considered.

The scary thing is not coming out with a darned fool thing, it is coming out with it in a nation which might then turn around and require it by law. I would have more sympathy for the Brits and others, but it seems they have chosen the path to serfdom and oppression. Go figure.

Mouse?

I have short arms.
